Students are required to write a 15-page analytical paper that addresses one of the topics or themes covered in this course. The paper should provide a well-thought-out analysis of the topic, examining various debates and dimensions in multiple contexts and from multiple perspectives. Critical arguments should be supported with examples from diverse cases from around the world and across time. The research should include but not be limited to the reading assignments in the syllabus. Choose one of the writing prompts below or one approved by the Professor.
As you research, ask yourself: “What are the competing theories associated with my chosen theme? What evidence do scholars reference to advance their different arguments?”
The paper should be properly formatted, well-cited, and reflect the student’s research and analytical skills. Use double-spaced (2.0), Times New Roman 12-point font with one-inch margins. Apply one official citation style consistently throughout, to include the bibliography.1 Use footnotes, not endnotes. All graphics, maps, and other visual support should be presented as an appendix. The title page, bibliography, appendices, and other supporting documents are not included in the page count. All responses should be submitted electronically through CANVAS. The analysis must be informed by multiple and varying types of sources including scholarly, popular, trade/professional, and primary source material. Strong submissions will rely heavily on scholarly and primary source material.
Grading Criteria:
1. Organization: Does the student present information in a clear, concise, and compelling manner?Does the introduction focus the reader’s attention on the complexities of the chosen topic and its importance to the post-war transition? Does the conclusion summarize and synthesize the main points, leaving the reader with a clear picture of the research findings? Is there a logical flow to the narrative with headings and subheadings to guide the reader? (8%)
2. Research: Does the paper employ multiple and varying types of sources, to include at least one citation from each type of source? (scholarly, popular, trade, and primary) Does it reference at least two readings from the course? Does it draw examples and supporting evidence from multiple case studies? (35%)
3. Analysis/Arguments: Does the paper demonstrate authoritative knowledge of the relevant theoretical concepts and arguments? Does the analysis incorporate diverse and competing perspectives? Does it articulate the interconnectivity between the chosen problem set and other dimensions of the reconstruction process? (50%)
4. Writing Style: Is the document free from spelling, typographical and grammatical errors? Is work properly cited? Has one official citation style been applied consistently and correctly throughout the document? Does the document conform to prescribed formatting specifications, to include a final length of 10-12 pages of analytic content? Is there a bibliography? (7%)
Research Questions:
Under what circumstances will a peace agreement be most successful? In your answer, focus on the content of the agreement as well as the role of outside parties. Evaluate the success of several peace agreements in your answer to demonstrate their strengths and weaknesses.
